Unlocking the key to optimal mens health

The 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Players Association included significant positive developments regarding the health and safety of players. One addition that I am particularly proud of is the creation of The Trust (Powered by the NFLPA) The Trust’s mission is to support NFL players as they live their purpose beyond football. The Trust’s services address three key areas of life — Community and Connection Opportunities, Health and Wellness Resources, and Personal and Business Development. The Trust was instrumental in providing resources that not only enabled me to complete my doctoral degree but I have also benefited from the Brain and Body Assessment. This comprehensive, in-depth health evaluation informs many of my lifestyle choices as I continue life beyond the game. The assessment included the following: Internal Medicine Evaluation, Neurological Evaluation, Neuropsychological/Behavioral Health Evaluation, Sleep Evaluation, Musculoskeletal/Rehabilitation Evaluation, Physical Therapy Assessment, Body Composition Evaluation/Dietary Consultation, and Cardiovascular Evaluation.

As we wrap up Men’s Health Month 2023, I wanted to encourage men to be proactive in their health and wellness. Statistics show that men live six years less than women, which researchers believe is correlated with the fact that men are proven to have lower health literacy levels. The data which shocked me the most was that 63% of men of color report not getting regular health screenings.

Men, better health must become a priority in our lives.

Given all the advancements that have come with the digital information age we are currently experiencing, willful ignorance is no longer an acceptable excuse.

Self-Care: An Essential Investment

Gentlemen, self-care is not a luxury but a necessity. Prioritizing self-care means consciously setting aside time to nurture our physical, emotional, and mental well-being. It's about creating a healthy work-life balance, engaging in enjoyable activities, and incorporating healthy habits into our daily routines.

Physical self-care encompasses regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient rest. Engaging in physical activity not only enhances our physical fitness but also releases endorphins that boost mood and reduce stress. Remember, even small steps towards an active lifestyle can yield significant benefits.

Equally important is emotional self-care. Engage in activities that bring you joy and help you unwind. It could be anything from spending quality time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or even practicing mindfulness techniques such as meditation or deep breathing exercises. Taking time allows you to recharge and be more present in all aspects of your life.

Mental Health: The Foundation of Overall Well-being

While physical health tends to be emphasized, it is crucial not to overlook the significance of mental health. Just like women, men experience a range of emotions, stressors, and pressures that can affect their well-being. If not adequately addressed, societal expectations, work pressures, and personal relationships can take a toll on mental health.

One key aspect of mental health is acknowledging and expressing emotions. Remember, it's okay to feel vulnerable and seek support when needed. Embracing emotional intelligence enables us to cultivate resilience and maintain healthier personal and professional relationships.

Take charge of your well-being, break free from societal norms, and prioritize your mental, physical, and emotional health. Together, let's redefine masculinity by fostering a culture that values holistic well-being for all men.
